Wheaten Marans
Marans are a must for those of us chasing a rainbow basket, and what better variety than our favorite wheaten color. Wheaten Marans were on our wish list for a long time and we were excited to finally acquire them. Heading into our 3rd year with this breed in 2026, we love them both as a pure flock and also in crosses for the variety they bring in feather patterns and egg colors.
Marans are a straight combed, larger bird with feathered legs. Wheaten is one of the more rare varieties of this bird. They are very calm, friendly birds that do well in a mixed flock. This makes them fun for the backyard chicken keeper.
We keep a blue wheaten and splash wheaten rooster with our flock. Offspring will be wheaten, blue wheaten or splash wheaten.
We find our Wheatens to be excellent layers, producing around 200 large eggs per year. Eggs are a rich reddish brown with a range of darker speckles.
